Industrial Visit to Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.

Gurgaon

Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organised an industrial visit for 36 students of VIth semester from Mechanical Engineering on 3rd April 2015 at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL). Students were accompanied by faculty members Lokesh Kumar and Kuldeep Sangwan.

Mr. V.K. Malhotra, Manager - Public Relations welcomed the team to the company. He along with the Engineers at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. briefed about the 6 stages of manufacturing:

1. Blanking

2. Stamping

3. Welding

4. Painting

5. Assembly

6. Inspection

The company officials screened Video films about the production system including paint shop to the students and also clarified their doubts. The students were introduced to the overall infrastructure of the company premise. The company covers an area of 297 Acre at Gurgaon. 20000 Employees are working with this company. 5000 cars are manufactured in Gurgaon plant per day though initially it was 50 cars per day. They have manufactured 12.9 Lacs cars in 2014-15. They told that a total of 15 Million vehicles are being manufactured by the company till date. MSIL’s total market share in India is 44%.

Currently 17 models of 200 variants of MSIL cars are available in the market. Their Research & Development unit is situated in Rohtak. The officials said that a car takes about 12hrs for its manufacturing i.e. from raw sheet to a completely manufactured car. The roll out time for every car is 12 Seconds.

Students got an opportunity to have a practical knowledge about the main operations done in each shop, usage and handling of raw materials. In the Press shop the machines were loaded for making body panels. The students were introduced to the Blanking and stamping operations. While going around the welding shop, overhead and Ground Level Conveyors students learnt about spot welding. Here they came to know about joining body panels and other small components. Various Spot Fixing Jigs and Robots used in the production process were also shown to the team.

The visit was very educational for the entire team because they got a practical and industry oriented exposure. The students were highly benefited from the visit as they can relate both theory with practical situation.
